What is it like to work for Thorntons PLC

Wellbeing
Wellbeing
Thorntons have appointed a new Occupational Health provider and they have launched their annual wellbeing programme that will cover a range of health and wellbeing issues, supported by their onsite Occupation Health Nurse, as well as remote support and events especially for their retail teams. The wellbeing programme is designed to spark interest in a range of health related themes. Each month, the company will focus attention on a particular wellbeing issue to educate, raise awareness and provide practical and effective support for employees. The RetailTrust helpline is provided to their employees as part of their employee benefits package, sponsored by Thorntons. It’s a free and confidential service, available for all employees and their dependants. From counselling and financial advice to employment law, this helpline offers expertise on a range of subjects, listens to their employees and assists them over the phone when necessary. In addition, Thorntons partner with many local providers including gyms and leisure facilities, with many employees being active members and participating in classes and events (their Exec team regularly attend a Tuesday morning circuit’s class!).
My Team
My Team
Employees from Head Office at Thorntons recently attended a Business Update event at a leading conference venue, set in 26 acres of spectacular grounds which was an inspirational location for an informative afternoon. They spent the day reflecting on the successes of their recent business performance and senior managers provided an update on the company’s strategy in a ‘speed networking’ format, with a series of punchy presentations during a set period of time. The evening entertainment included inflatable games and a BBQ feast, which allowed employees to socialise and network with other colleagues who they may not necessarily directly work with on a day-to-day basis. Thorntons hold both retail and franchise conference every year, which all of their store managers and business stakeholders are invited to. This year retail conference was located at Alton Towers over two days. Employees heard from various members of the executive team, including their CEO and were able to get a preview of new products and the Christmas strategy. After business matters were discussed, the second day presented an opportunity for those who attended to mingle with each other and enjoy the rides and attractions that the venue had on offer.

Thornton’s have a Recognition Programme based around their 3 core values, where nominations are made for individuals by individuals. It has helped people to gain a greater understanding of their core values. Thornton’s People vision and strategy is all about bringing their values - Bringing People Together; Creativity & Excellence - to life. Employees simply fill out one of the recognition nomination cards to highlight the efforts of other individuals and post it into one of the collection boxes. These cards are reviewed and discussed by the recognition committee, made up of people of various grades and areas of the business that select and agree the winners. The Employee of the Month that wins, not only gets to be ‘Thorntons Famous’ on the intranet for a week, but also receives a bottle of Champagne, VIP parking space for the month, some personalised chocolates and £100 in gift vouchers. Thorntons also recognise a Team of the Quarter, these are not always departmental teams but also include cross functional project teams. At the annual Christmas party, the winners of these two awards will be chosen from the winners of the monthly and quarterly awards that year. An amazing £1000 in vouchers will be awarded to the individual winner and the Team prize will be up to £100 worth of vouchers per member.
