What is it like to work for Torchbox

Tom and Olly established Torchbox to help the people and organisations making the world a better place. This ethos still holds true today with the majority of the company’s clients consisting of charities, NGO’s, Museums and Universities. Tom and Olly know that the key to creating award-winning client work starts with employees. That’s why they’ve spent a lot of time and hard work, creating a friendly, open and collaborative working environment. They can’t be doing too badly as they have already picked up seven awards this year. Torchbox employees are continuously encouraged to go above and beyond for clients. They are also encouraged to learn about the latest industry advancements, which they share in their weekly lunch chats. Olly and Tom have put a lot of effort into making Torchbox a great place to work. They know that at the end of the day, happy employees produce great work. That’s why employees are discouraged from working out of core office hours, and are treated to all expenses-paid ski trips. Tom and Olly are both highly approachable, and considerate leaders. They sit amongst the team in the office, and are both involved in running different departments. They’re very open and honest about company happenings, which staff appreciate, as at the end of the day, they are all in this together.
As mentioned previously, happy employees produce innovative client work. That’s why Tom and Olly make sure there is a range of initiatives to enhance employee wellbeing, such as bi-monthly company socials in the form of pub quizzes, treasure hunts, team building activities, the Torchbox ski trip, weekly team lunches. All employees are actively encouraged to work core office hours only. This is important to Tom and Olly as they want all employees to have a good work life balance. There's also a few massage chairs in the office too. One of Torchbox’s favourite practices has been the introduction of having dogs in the office. Studies have proved that dogs boost productivity and ease workplace stress. All employees are big fans of this initiative, as are Jack and Beryl, the office dogs!

In 2009, Torchbox established a regular tech meetup for designers and developers, called Oxford Geek Nights. The aim of the event series is to bring the Oxford tech community together, providing them with a free event where they can learn from and network with industry peers. More than 44 Oxford Geek Nights have now been hosted and they have attracted over one thousand attendees.
