About Tullis Russell

What is it like to work for Tullis Russell

Wellbeing
Wellbeing
The organisation seeks to enhance the well being of employees. They do this mainly through the utilisation of their occupational health resources, which support people with health problems. This year they have invested more into this area with the employment of a permanent occupational health resource in their Papermakers business.

The company ownership structure means that a charitable trust fund, 'The Russell Trust', owns 28% of the company shares. This trust uses the dividend from its shareholding, around £250,000 per annum, to make charitable donations to the local community. They have engaged with the local community and local councils to build the Tullis Russell Environmental Education Centre (TREE Centre). This centre supports their environmental branding and will provide environmental education to the local community and schoolchildren.

My Company
My Company
The company ownership culture means that they pay particular attention to employees' ideas and feedback. During the last 12 months they have focused on developing their Employee Ownership Board (EOB), their internal engagement survey (Truvoice) and their continuous improvement programme. They launched Truvoice two years ago and have now reached the third survey cycle. The survey was developed internally by a cross section of employees, managers and employee representatives. It measures their progress towards developing an effective 'ownership culture' and the survey items were explicitly designed to measure what their design team saw as important. The survey launch was supported by communication materials and training and education for managers and their work teams. Their response rate has typically been extremely high, at around 97% across the Group. A results suite is released every year and managers engage with their work teams to review and action plan around the results. This process has led to significant improvements. The organisation has also hired a continuous improvement manager and begun a six sigma programme.
