New managers are supported with an induction programme compiled after discussion with the quality and professional development manager. This could include people management skills development and/or any relevant management development. An extensive, ongoing management development programme is available for senior managers, middle and first line managers. The sessions are aimed towards increasing their knowledge of specific areas, for example time management and inviting external consultants. Managers have been supported to take high level strategic management courses, aspiring principal courses and the principals qualification. First line managers have also been supported to take appropriate qualifications. Executive team members act as mentors for other managers and other managers mentor other staff members. Any additional peer mentoring is organised on an ad hoc basis where requested. All managers receive 360 feedback from their peers as part of the appraisal process.

Wakefield College offer employees a range of courses to assist with their personal growth. They offer long courses leading to qualifications, industrial skills updating, ICT and teaching qualifications to name a few. Formal qualifications may be supported by time release, course costs, membership fees and purchasing of resources. The College gives paid release and covers training costs for all staff to take part in the Health and Wellbeing Development day. Contributions towards fees for courses relating to personal development are also offered if appropriate and staff are also supported to take pre-retirement courses. There are places available each year on the Aspiring Managers Programme and Aspiring Senior Managers Programme. Selection involves a rigorous selection process to identify potential talent. Those offered places will undertake a programme of development, tailored to the individual.

The college recognise hard work and outstanding contributions from employees with certificates and also provide instant rewards on an ad-hoc basis. They listen and engage with their employees through formal team briefings and an annual internal survey. Results from the survey are fed back to employees through team meetings, the findings and actions are also made available on the intranet. Wakefield College use flyers attached to payslips as a method of communication. The flyers are used to update employees on matters including strategic priorities, emergency contact details, travel information and the cycle to work scheme.
