Westbury wants to build its staff a home for life — literally. After a year of working with the firm, employees are eligible for a 2.5% discount on a new Westbury house.
The construction company also helps staff to build satisfying careers at its 13 sites around the UK. Its highest scores in our survey come from job satisfaction: 79% of staff are never bored with their work, the eighth-best result. Three-quarters say their job is stimulating; 77% feel supported by their managers and 72% feel they have control over their working lives.
Pay is a relatively modest £29,451 a year for a site manager but there are incentives: awards include a regional employee of the month (£50) and regional employee of the year (£500), with a top prize of £1,000.
Five out of six employees scoop a profit-related bonus, most recently 3% of salary, and there is a share incentive plan for everyone after six months’ service, giving one share free for every two bought.
The firm has a fairly even male:female ratio and staff feel the firm counteracts the “macho” tendency of the building industry despite unexceptional maternity benefits.
Jenny Dubock, an assistant site manager in the West Midlands, says: “I wanted a job that allowed me to work outside, so this is perfect. Being a woman on site is still quite unusual but this has made me even more determined to succeed and I am given every encouragement by my Westbury colleagues.”
