Whitbread strive to support and encourage development within their Management populations. When Managers are appointed to a new role they are assigned a mentor who will be an experienced and high performing operator at the same level. In Premier Inn the ‘Shooting Stars’ programme supports team members as they progress into their first management role all the way through to being an experienced multi-site manager. Whitbread also have Apprenticeships programmes to develop and support team members, starting from an Intermediate level 2 through to an MSC level 7 in Multi Site Management. Across Premier Inn 398 Apprentices have been promoted, 102 to Operations Manager, 58 to Assistant Operations Manager, 166 to a Premier Inn Host, 58 to Head Housekeeper and 14 to Head Chef. Health & Safety also features heavily, with bi-annual audits conducted by an external provider to ensure that all sites and Managers are compliant with health & safety laws and internal targets relating to the safety of team members. Across Whitbread they measure management performance through their Whitbread in numbers card or ‘WINcards’, which is split into four central measures: Winning Teams, Customer Heartbeat, Profitable Growth and Good Together.

Last year Whitbread introduced their 'Pay For Progression’ (p4p) scheme, which aligns every hourly paid team member to a proficiency level to signify their level of knowledge and responsibility within their role. For each proficiency level there are fixed and competitive pay rates, as well as clear learning and development curriculum to help individuals get to the next stage. To date 90.6% of Whitbread’s restaurant Back of House Team Members have received a p4p increase. Across Premier Inn, 92% of the hourly paid Team Members have received a p4p increase. In restaurants, Whitbread’s ‘Progressing into General Management’, ‘Progressing into Kitchen Management’ and ‘Progressing into First Management’ courses are designed to support the company’s management population with the next stage of their careers. The ‘Shooting Stars’ programme in Premier Inn and the ‘Rising Stars’ programme in Costa are specific workshops designed to help enhance key management, leadership skills and abilities. In Costa the Talent camp delivers sessions on how to have an effective conversation with teams about potential and how to spot, nurture and grow talent within the business. This is followed by face to face workshops and an Exec Leader delivers a session on their views of potential and why it is needed in business. Across the Group the Whitbread Investing in Skill and Employment Team supports the company strategy to engage with the education system, offering work experience placement and promoting the Apprenticeships programmes Whitbread offer.

Within Premier Inn and Restaurant, Whitbread offer all of their employees a My Rewards Card and access to exclusive benefits and discounts. The My Rewards Card is a reloadable Mastercard card that allows team members to spend the money they have earned through incentives or recognition anywhere that accepts Mastercard, whether it be online or in store. All incentive payments will be made to team members. When team members use their My Rewards card to pay for their everyday shopping they can earn cash back that is paid onto their card the following month, sometimes up to £500 a year for an average family! Team Members can also use their My Rewards card to buy discounted vouchers, either as a gift or for themselves. An example of some of the discounts they receive is 15% at Goldsmiths or 10% at Wickes. In the company’s coffee shops they also have the Costa FeelGood Scheme, which enables Team Members to earn points for delivering strong KPI results in their store. Points can then be exchanged via an online shopping catalogue for everything from DVDs to holiday vouchers.
