About Wychavon District Council

What is it like to work for Wychavon District Council

Leadership
Leadership
A key message from Jack, the Managing Director shortly follows the fortnightly Senior Management Team meetings to share with employee discussions and decisions made. This promotes transparency and the cascade of important information throughout the Council. He demonstrates through his actions how he wishes to be fairly treated alongside all employees; for example, when the Council tightened up entitlements to payments of car allowances for budget pressures, he relinquished his entitlement to an essential user car allowance and also wrote to the Leader of the Council indicating that because of the economic climate he will not accept any increase in salary for the next 2 years and that, even then, any increase would be subject to the Council achieving its programmed savings for the next 2 financial years.
Wellbeing
Wellbeing
They do a number of things that enhance the wellbeing of their employees, however one of the things that they consider the most innovative is the Health Awareness Sessions where they have run a number of sessions to promote awareness of both women’s and men’s health concerns, the most effective being the Breast Cancer one aimed at women and the Prostate Cancer one for men. They know from feedback that these sessions led to the early diagnosis of cancer in a number of employees, who without the information from the sessions may have missed early warning signs. One of their employees recently had to have Prostate Cancer treatment through the Private Medical Insurance scheme the Council offered. Following his treatment they have supported his wish to raise awareness of prostate cancer to his colleagues through articles in the newsletters and most recently via “Movember” .

Most recently their Staff Sounding Board, which includes representatives from all service units, developed a process for Recognition Awards and the 'Wychies' Staff nominations were put forward through the intranet. The Staff Sounding Board reviewed the nominations and winners of the awards were confirmed at a whole council award ceremony, voted for by the Staff Sounding Board. There were a number of individual awards as well as on outstanding team award.
