IT MIGHT LEASE cars, but Zenith wants its employees to take a walk... to Australia. Last year, the firm challenged the 520-strong workforce at its Leeds headquarters and Crowthorne and Solihull offices to see which team could “walk to Oz” first, measuring the distance they covered over five months using pedometers.
The business — which is on on our lists for a fourth year, having entered first as a Best Small Company — provides salary-sacrifice car schemes and company vehicles for corporations such as Asda and Santander. It was founded in 1989 and merged with Leasedrive in 2014, doubling its size, revenue and profits.
Employees believe the company cares about the environment, a 78% positive score. It caps carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles, and has an employee car share scheme and waste reduction programmes.
Charitable activities during work hours raised £22,000 for good causes last year with the firm’s active encouragement (88%). Zenith supports its local community (68%) by giving everyone three work days a year for volunteering. Projects have included helping to plant and maintain a vegetable bed for the Calverley in Bloom initiative in west Leeds.
Managers hold monthly team meetings and sit with their staff, who say they listen to their ideas and concerns (73%) and care about them as individuals (79%). And, thanks to that Oz challenge, people tend to walk the floor to talk to colleagues rather than sending each other emails.
