Best Companies Case Study: Savers Health & Beauty

Giving Savers Health & Beauty an engagement measure with meaning

The Challenge

Savers Health & Beauty wanted to replace their own engagement survey with something that would give them practical insights they could use to improve.

They recognised that despite recording positive results, their internal engagement survey methodology lacked the independence and credibility they needed to understand how their staff felt about the organisation.

They wanted to:

  • Get an independent measure of engagement
  • Discover the issues that mattered most to employees
  • Use data to improve engagement
  • Continue to foster a family feel within the business

The Solution

The Start package

The b-Heard survey and Workplace Insight Tool allowed Savers Health & Beauty to see where their engagement strengths and challenges lay. With independent and accurate data, they were able to start making changes they knew would improve engagement.

The changes, from small things like offering staff free hot drinks to major things like increasing minimum hour contracts from 4 to 8 hours per week, came as a direct response to staff feedback.

Making engagement simple

“Best Companies really support the journey of the survey process, so that every step of the way we know what we need to do. The website is user friendly but it’s great to have someone at the end of the phone to talk to.

The difference working with Best Companies has made to Savers is just making engagement simple, it’s about how happy people are at work. When we make a decision, we think about how it will impact engagement.”

Hayley Whittaker, Savers Health & Beauty Senior People Manager

The Outcome

The small and large changes Savers Health & Beauty made, based on the survey and Workplace Insight, resulted in measurable improvements that have had a “massive impact” on engagement.

Their Best Companies Index (BCI) score rose from 651.6 to 695.9 between 2015 and 2018, earning them 1 Star accreditation status and the number 7 spot on the Best Big Companies to Work For list.

“We are passionate about still retaining our family feel and sense of team ethic as we grow. Best Companies tells us how we are doing and so far it is all positive.”

Hayley Whittaker, Savers Health & Beauty Senior People Manager
