The MC³ methodology: Motivating
Motivating is one of 4 elements that make up our managerial engagement methodology MC³.
Motivational managers sell the direction and vision of an organisation and ensure others can see how their role impacts on the bigger picture. We divide ‘motivating’ into 2 key behaviours:
Energising:
“Using your own energy to release the energy from your team”
Inspiring:
“Telling people about the goal, helping people to see why achieving their tasks is good for everyone”
Within our b-Heard survey there are 19 scoring statements, which when applied to the management level of an organisational structure, measures managerial engagement. Managers are given a star rating, with 3* managers leading the way in engaging their teams.
3★ motivational managers
Below are some best practice examples of what 3★ managers do to motivate their team. These are real examples taken from interviews across a range of sectors, organisations and job roles.
Share and share alike
“I host a weekly team meeting where we spend ten minutes on corporate messages and then each person has ten minutes to share their own ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’. This is where everyone chooses one thing from each category that happened over the weekend or the previous week (it can be home or work related). Invariably, as well as the great things, it also brings out anything the team are unsure of, need help with or are upset about. We sometimes find a solution together as there is usually someone with similar experience who brings that to the table.”

For all to see
“I believe in visual management. All around my office and on my door, I have information about how we are performing as a team. This includes the KPIs that I’m measured upon. Anyone can see all the figures and where we are up to. It’s important for everyone to feel accountability.”

Making it personal
“Our bonus structure can be complicated to get your head around. I created a bonus calculator so the team can work out exactly where they are, and importantly what they need to do to achieve their desired outcome. I then encourage them to make an action plan of how they are going to get there.”

The fun factor
“I try and inject a sense of fun to the team. We do little team building activities like treasure hunts with crème eggs or guess the baby picture. My team seem to really enjoy things like this and it’s a great way to get to know each other more.”

Start as you mean to go on
“When I begin working with a new team member, I think it is so important to set expectations. I always make sure to ask “What do you expect of me?” as well as “What do I expect of you?”. It’s a two-way street and you need to ensure that you are both clear on what you want from each other.”
