ARAG has grown consistently year on year thanks to experienced leadership, shared values and a robust product innovation programme. The international insurance intermediary is innovating in the workplace, too.

Early in the pandemic, the senior leadership team realised that the world of work was likely to change forever and set about discussing questions such as how many days a week in the office are required to preserve the social glue that binds the team together.

They realised that the workplace of the future needs to provide options the home office doesn't, ie, the ability to meet and interact with colleagues face to face. Designers were employed to produce a collaborative and flexible space with far less emphasis on desks to encourage staff back into the office after the pandemic.

ARAG, which provides a range of legal insurance and emergency assistance products in partnership with brokers, insurers and solicitors, has offices in Bristol and London.

While working at home, staff were sent “Office to You” and “Connect” care packages, containing items such as hand sanitiser, tea and biscuits and notebooks. The company's quarterly social events, which have included escape rooms and cocktail-making, were moved online, with a magician and a virtual pub quiz providing some of the fun.

Training also moved online. ARAG is committed to supporting the professional development and personal growth of its workers through organisations such as the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Institute of Leadership & Management.

The managing director and senior leaders switched from quarterly to weekly addresses to staff during the first lockdown, and then fortnightly. This created a sense of “in it together” and greater awareness. Guest speakers were added from across the business, to share expert knowledge.

ARAG created a Buddy Bingo system, which matches staff members with other employees at random for a coffee and a chat. The leadership team also took advantage of this opportunity to speak to colleagues they would not normally come into contact with.

ARAG's campaigns to encourage staff to be active included a virtual trip around its worldwide network of offices. Workers were invited to walk, run, cycle or even paddleboard to contribute. Each time the collective mileage total reached another office, the staff there sent a virtual postcard with information about themselves.
