Founded in 1975, Barrhead Travel has expanded from a traditional ‘bucket and spade’ travel agent to a multi-faceted travel group offering bespoke holidays to all corners of the globe.
Barrhead Travel has an in-house training facility, employing specialist consultants that provide expert advice in areas such as long haul, cruise, and touring holidays, and promoting youth employment through its apprenticeship scheme.
The organisation supports all employee development including Apprenticeship programmes, Leadership Development, Skills Development and life tools like Mental Health First Aid.
It recruited 50 apprentices in 2022 and has committed to the same for 2023, giving many opportunities to earn a full-time salary whilst staff work towards recognised qualification. Furthermore, it hosts Breakfast Training sessions each Wednesday for employees to learn from tourist boards, cruise companies, and hotels and enjoy some breakfast whilst learning. This is a protected learning time with stores closed to ensure everyone can attend and benefit from the learning.
Worked closely with its College partners, it offers external training opportunities like CMI Level 3 & 5 in Management, giving Managers and Leaders a chance to get a leading qualification that is transferable.
Other course include Excel skills as well as LinkedIn Learning, where staff have access to thousands of courses on-demand so they can develop at their own pace at a time and place that suits them, this especially helps those who work part time.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
The organisation has established and trained a group of Mental Health First Aiders and sees development of its managers as key to ensuring they understand the interaction between health, wellness, and work. Managers are also trained to give consideration to mental health, musculoskeletal disorders, and stress, and how we can support employees in the workplace.
My team is fun to work with
Barrhead Travel brings its people together in-person regularly – including conferences, quarterly meetings and social events. One thing it also incorporates is external supplier events where it brings its partners and colleagues together at fun educational events. These events are a core part of its culture and help improve inter-business and inter-industry comms.
I am happy with the pay and benefits I receive in this job
Every year, the organisation hosts foreign trips. Groups of up to 10 staff members are flown to world-wide destinations. During these trips they are immersed in the destination, with all meals, accommodation, excursions and travel costs paid for. Upon return, they become a champion of the destination and present about the areas visited to colleagues.
