More than a fifth of Benfield employees earn in excess of £100,000 per year, but a job at the world's leading independent reinsurance and risk intermediary is about more than megabucks. Staff feel valued and well led too. Chief executive Grahame Chilton — or "Chily" as his friends and colleagues know him — is not only a regular in The Sunday Times Rich List (as is Benfield's chairman John Coldman), he is also a regular on conference calls shared with team members from all global offices. During such calls key business decisions, global strategy and organisational changes are discussed, meaning everyone — not just senior management — knows what is happening in the company first hand. It explains why faith in the person leading the organisation is so high; this question scored 82% positive in the employee survey, ranking 23rd. Staff are also very proud to work for Benfield, rating this point 80% positive, and would strongly recommend working there to others (81%). They certainly aren't keen to leave — 206 employees have been with the company for five to 10 years; 64 for 10 to 15, and 122 people have been on Benfield's payroll for more than 15 years. A new online system allows employees to access their payroll information from anywhere, enabling them to print payslips, P60s, P11Ds and amend bank details. A wide range of flexible working options is offered, including job-sharing, home working and reduced hours. All are eligible for all permutations, not just the more senior people. These initiatives do not go unnoticed and employees think the company really tries to help them (a positive score of 81%, ranking 24th). Fittingly for a top financial firm, staff receive excellent benefits. There is private healthcare, a noncontributory pension scheme that allows people to choose from more than 70 investment funds, which can be tracked and planned online, an employee assistance programme, unlimited access to private GP services and access to physiotherapy without the need for a GP referral. Staff can have blood pressure and cholesterol tests, as well as flu vaccinations. Spiritual wellbeing is also looked after, thanks to a multifaith room at the Bishopsgate offices. Such practices mean that even though they work in a high-pressure environment, Benfield staff do not appear to suffer from City "burnout", with a 79% positive score from those saying that their health is not suffering because of their work.
