Bleecker began with a food truck, after a corporate lawyer quit her job in New York and moved to London to serve street food. Zan Kaufman tasted the best burger she had ever eaten while in the Big Apple and it inspired her mission to serve up "life-changing" food.
Bleecker launched in 2012 and has grown to a group of eight restaurants. It has built a reputation for serving the best burger in London and has been on Time Out magazine's best burger list every year since 2015. Forty-day aged, grass-fed beef is the secret to the flavour, while the fries are hand cut and come from fresh potatoes and shakes are made from Bleecker's house ice cream.
The teams at Bleecker work collaboratively, having each other's backs, the company says. It describes its culture as: "Bleecker: the best burgers in an equal world where we value being united, passionate, diverse and empowering." In the past 18 months, the company has been carrying out exercises to teach and bring alive the culture, looking at where it is doing well and where it can do better. Staff are told of decisions being made and how they have been guided by the company's values.
Liam O'Keefe, the brand director, says: "We have won awards in London, the UK and globally for having the best burger. Now we want to make Bleecker as great for our teams, as our burger is for our customers."
