Within days of the suspension of football due to coronavirus, Everton Football Club launched its "Blue Family" campaign to support struggling families with zoom calls, texts, welfare checks, food parcels and other practical help.
The Premier League club's players and manager, Carlo Ancelotti, also pitched in and the club reallocated staff to oversee the campaign, run in conjunction with its charity, Everton in the Community with staff from the Everton Fan Centre also making thousands of calls.
Known as the People's Club, Everton is driven by four key values developed in collaboration with employees: Family, Authenticity, Determination and Ambition. Underpinning these is its motto - Nil Satis Nisi Optimum - nothing but the best is good enough - and together these inform the employee experience from recruitment to personal development and helping staff plan for their future.
Everton Football Club and Everton in the Community has more than 500 permanent staff, supported by just under 1,000 casual matchday workers based across five sites in Merseyside. These include the club's new headquarters at the iconic Royal Liver Building, Goodison Park, Everton's historic stadium, Everton Free School and Football College and The Blue Base where the club's charity runs programmes for the elderly and disabled.
Everton's Disability, Race Equality and Women's networks have continued to be active during the pandemic and to mark Black History Month, one employee joined defender Mason Holgate in the You Cannot Be What You Cannot See campaign to celebrate leaders, change-makers and inspirational figures from the region's black community.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
Every year, employees are invited to make a wish which the club may grant. Last year a management accountant was given the chance to train with the Everton Women's team, an employee had coffee with their favourite player, and the club provided a room makeover for an employee's ill relative.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Virtual daily lunchtime events were launched to keep the Everton Family connected with sessions including yoga, mindfulness, music and quizzes. A Blues Radio, hosted by eager staff DJs, was also introduced and a virtual staff Christmas lunch included special celebrity guests, ex-players and current first team members making an appearance.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
One of the leading sports charities in the UK, Everton in the Community, worked with more than 145,816 people last year and runs more than 40 programmes tackling social issues in Merseyside. Staff can get involved through volunteering, joining its community choir and taking on fundraising challenges.
