Family Action has been building stronger families since 1869, and today works with over 60,000 families through more than 160 community-based services. Thousands more are supported with financial assistance through education and welfare grants programmes.
The London-based charity transforms lives nationwide by providing practical, emotional and financial support to those who are experiencing poverty, disadvantage and social isolation. Its innovative services reach out to those in need, build communities, build skills and resilience and improve the life chances of children and adults.
At the outset of Covid-19, a coronavirus advice group was swiftly created to help staff respond to developments and government guidance. A new mailbox was opened for pandemic-related queries to provide any practical solutions. The charity also launched Staying Connected, a strategy that incorporates sending out a daily Getting Through Together! bulletin featuring important news, support and resources and positive updates from colleagues.
The senior leadership group (SLG) formed an Open House initiative to enable direct communication between all employees and the SLG. It approved a new budget targeting workforce wellbeing. All staff now have access to the Calm app to help them and their families.
A Wellbeing Challenges Platform promotes in-house events such as a Steps challenge, with inclusive ways for those with low mobility to take part. Space to Talk sessions, with virtual coffee mornings and a buddy-up system, invite staff to discuss how they are feeling and what they are struggling with in a safe space.
