Fulcrum grew out of the Gas Board and then operated as the UK's connection arm of Transco and National Grid after privatisation. In 2010, it was floated independently on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) and the enterprise grew by entering multi-utility markets, developing the expertise of its staff and through acquisitions.

Based in Sheffield and operating across the UK, the progress and growth of the business has been built on being agile, customer-centric and a commitment to be a great place to work. Growth has been supported by its services being delivered by a directly employed, multi-skilled, workforce that operates in a supportive and collaborative environment. The multi-award winning group has created a culture built around its SPIRIT values (Safe, Partnership, Improvement, Reliability, Integrity and Together).

Staff are pivotal to the success of independent multi-utility infrastructure and services provider Fulcrum. They pride themselves on creating an environment where staff treat each other like family and care about each other's wellbeing. It promotes a positive work/life balance with its flexible working policies, encourages charitable activities and holds regular social events. Staff can share in the firm's success too, through annual Sharesave schemes. Terry Dugdale, took over as chief executive at the beginning of the year, after more than a year as group chief operating officer.
