As the largest independent furniture retailer in Britain, Furniture Village doesn’t ‘sit back’ when it comes to employee satisfaction.
The organisation strives to create a positive, rewarding, and unique business culture for everyone who walks through its doors, and there’s a great many benefits on offer for employees.
These include an industry-leading pay structure, generous paid holiday allowance, pension plan, childcare vouchers, and a generous employee discount policy. Combine this with Furniture Village’s own in-house development programme, it’s easy to see how over 90% of its employees have been with the firm for more than a year – with many more reaching the five-, 10-, 15- and 20-year milestones.
The organisation, which started out as a single store in 1989, has enjoyed steady growth and today has over 50 stores across the UK, with over 1.5 million square feet of retail space and over 1,200 team members.
Every detail counts for the retailer, as a business – ensuring it offers the best choice of affordable, high-quality furniture – but also for its people as individuals. It takes the time to get to know every employee, encouraging and creating opportunities for them to progress quickly within the business.
Fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce is important to Furniture Village, and its recruitment policy reflects this. It actively seeks to support anyone with disabilities to fulfil their potential. It also offers flexible working requirements to help all colleagues achieve an optimum work/life balance.
I am inspired by the person leading this organisation
To keep lines of communication open when the pandemic prevented face-to-face interaction, the leadership team sent twice weekly newsletter communications to all employees with business updates. Managers were encouraged to contact all employees to both keep in touch as well as check on welfare.
My team is fun to work with
To keep team spirits high, a ‘togetherness’ video was created from pictures and videos sent in from colleagues across the business. Zoom quizzes or virtual drinks were held to create a sense of togetherness and employees were encourages to share updates about life events and birthdays.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) was put in place to support colleagues – with details shared regularly by the business. All colleagues that were furloughed were contacted by the People Team for a wellbeing call.
