The firm offers its team of around 120 staff flexibility and properly designed jobs and workloads. All staff can work from home for part of their week to suit their lifestyles and flex around caring responsibilities and school pick-ups.
GJE is currently trialling agile and hybrid working to meet the needs of different groups of people within the business. Support staff are currently required in the office four days a month, and trainees and partners at least three days a week.
And the firm recognises that it’s important people come into the office because ‘they want to, not just because they have to.’ So, it’s ‘put the buzz back in’, relocating staff to one floor and introducing hot-desking so people can work alongside people in different teams.
It’s also about giving people purpose to be in through training, social events and team catch-ups and the added incentive of a free snacks cupboard and breakfast bar!

While there’s no long-hours culture at GJE, fee earners are sometimes required to work late in the office to meet client deadlines. But they don’t have to worry about food or transport; they get a Deliveroo budget for dinner and taxis for the journey home.

There are coffee sessions twice a week where the team can come together for informal and open discussions, helping nurture relationships and generate ideas. There are also quarterly training away days where being in a different environment sparks creativity and passion and supports team building.
This job is good for my own personal growth
As IP is a small, specialist area of law, much training is via in-house experts. Administrative and fee-earning staff are supported to sit professional intellectual property qualifications, with additional tutorials and mentoring to ensure they’re properly prepared. Managers can also access external management training.
