HSDC is a leading further and higher education college providing learning across three campuses in Hampshire – Alton, Havant and South Downs. It was formed on 1st August 2017, following a merger of South Downs College and Havant Sixth Form College. That institution subsequently merged with Alton College on 1st March 2019, to become HSDC.

College provision includes nearly 40 A-level subjects as well as vocational courses, T-levels and UAL and BTEC qualifications. HSDC also delivers apprenticeships in partnership with leading local and national businesses. There are more than 6,500 students, with nearly 4,200 of these studying full-time and 330 apprentices. The college exists to realise the ambitions of the community in raising aspirations, enabling achievement and fulfilling dreams.

People are at the top of the HSDC agenda and the vision is for it to be the first-choice FE (further education) college by 2025 for students, staff and employers in Hampshire. The values shaping the institution include its open and supportive culture that harnesses the talents and ideas of both staff and students, inspiring innovation.

There was Covid-19 testing on campus for all employees during the course of the pandemic, plus support for anyone struggling with stress or anxiety about returning to the workplace.

HSDC is recognised as the learning heart of its communities. Ethical practices include acknowledging its environmental responsibility and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for staff and students

Featured Workplace Factors

My Manager

75% of staff agreed

I feel that my manager talks openly and honestly with me

Many managers are currently completing apprenticeships both internally and through the local university, and everyone at manager level has the support of an aligned people services business partner. Internal and external coaching is offered, as is a thorough induction process for new managers.

Leadership

51% of staff agreed

This organisation is run on strong values / principles

CEO and Principal Mike Gaston posts weekly Moment with Mike vlogs and there is an informal evening Time to Talk meeting with the Vice-Principal. Senior leaders all work to metrics set against the college's Drive to 25 strategic plan, and this filters through to teams in terms of performance plans and objective setting.

My Company

90% of staff agreed

I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation

With the college based at three different campuses, the pandemic actually encouraged people to work together on platforms such as Microsoft Teams, without having to gather in the same geographical place. This had the silver lining of cutting commutes and preventing travelling time or traffic getting in the way.

Quote from the top...
“People are at the centre of what we do at HSDC with students and their aspirations at the very heart of our business. Our people work exceedingly hard to ensure that our students receive the best education and help them on their journey to the future they aspire to whether it is Higher Education, work or developing social skills and building confidence. Our people are passionate about what we do and we have been working in collaboration with our staff teams to further develop and enhance our people strategies and create a positive and engaging workplace. Our survey has given us great confidence that the work we are doing is having a positive impact on our workforce and also gives us some additional areas to continue to work on.”

Leona Berry, Vice Principal - Organisational Development & People - HSDC
