Formed in 2017, HSDC is a leading further and higher education college providing learning across three campuses: Alton, Havant, and South Downs.
The college exists to realise the ambitions of the community in raising aspirations, enabling achievement, and fulfilling dreams. People - students and employees are at the top of the HSDC agenda and the vision is for it to be the first-choice FE (further education) college by 2025 for students, staff, and employers in Hampshire.
We pride ourselves in developing, upskilling, and supporting our staff as well as our students. This year, its staff have participated in training on AI and Digital Skills, Pedagogy, Relational Practice, Anti Racism and Mental Health to name a few. All staff at HSDC have the opportunity to spend 3 paid days each year visiting industry placements to research future trends and build networks.
The values shaping the institution include its open and supportive culture that harnesses the talents and ideas of both staff and students, inspiring innovation. HSDC is proud of its Staff Wellbeing service through its longstanding partnership with Mind which supports staff when they need it. Staff are also supported through its Menopause Network, Cycle to Work scheme, onsite gyms, fitness classes, hair and beauty salons, onsite nurseries, canteens and flu vaccine service.
HSDC is recognised as the learning heart of its communities. Ethical practices include acknowledging its environmental responsibility and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for staff and students.

CEO and Principal Mike Gaston posts weekly Moment with Mike vlogs and there is an informal evening Time to Talk meeting with the Vice-Principal. Senior leaders all work to metrics set against the college's Drive to 25 strategic plan, and this filters through to teams in terms of performance plans and objective setting.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
With the college based at three different campuses, the pandemic actually encouraged people to work together on platforms such as Microsoft Teams, without having to gather in the same geographical place. This had the silver lining of cutting commutes and preventing travelling time or traffic getting in the way.
