With some staff approaching 40 years service, furniture manufacturer and retailer HSL must be doing something right.
The West Yorkshire-based business, with more than 500 employees across its head office and 53 stores, is still family-run after 55 years. It sees every colleague as part of its family, valuing their "different skills, personalities and styles."
HSL prides itself on its "lovingly handcrafted" chairs, sofas and beds designed for comfort and support. And this focus on care and quality shapes its internal culture too.
It's just launched its 'HSL Cares Hub' to support colleagues through the cost-of-living crisis, with monthly financial wellbeing newsletters on everything from accessing the Employee Assistance Programme to making a health insurance claim. It also has a 'financial guru' running sessions to help colleagues make the most of their money.
And HSL has joined forces with a credit union to encourage staff to save straight from their wages at favourable rates. There's also a food pantry to help staff struggling to put food on the table.
To make day-to-day life a little sweeter, HSL organises 'surprise and delight' moments, from free fish and chip lunches to ice cream van visits. And there's a family fun day with a fete, stalls, rides and music.
HSL recognises that small gestures are just as important. Retail and logistics colleagues get a CEO or director 'thank you' for fabulous customer service reviews or a high-value order. And there are company cards for every eventuality, such as 'thinking of you' for hard times.
My team is fun to work with
'Gather' is the weekly performance and business update from senior leaders, and the quarterly 'Feel God News' collates colleague news and events. There are regular bitesize 'TED talks' led by the company's occupational therapists on topics such as dealing with stress and anxiety and how to sleep better.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
The HSL Training Academy for new recruits showcases its unique culture and ways of working. The four-day course includes a factory tour and experiences like wearing ageing suits and glasses simulating visual impairments. It brings to life the challenges some customers face, helping staff understand how this informs furniture design and manufacture.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
HSL aims to be carbon neutral by 2025. To achieve its 'Mission Zero' ambition, it's moved to 100% renewable energy sources, planted 5,000 trees in partnership with Eforests, donated 5,600 pieces of 'second quality' furniture to the British Heart Foundation, invested in reusable packaging and new technology to reduce waste during production.
