Agentle cycle through the lanes of Oxfordshire leads to a converted barn where a group of people are served cheese and wine. JJ, a marketing agency, organised this Beaujolais Nouveau event for staff. Other treats include pancake days, a Strictly Come Dancing themed party and a sports fundraising day. There is little wonder that the 67 employees enjoy being in their teams (an 83% positive score overall). JJ, which has been on the Sunday Times Best Companies lists for three years, survived some difficult times last year. Due to a change in the client's funding, the company lost an account and had to make 17 people redundant. It redeployed four people internally and gave job-seeking assistance to those who had to leave. Although JJ gets one of the worst relative scores for job security as a result, this is still a 71% positive score (96th overall). Staff say managers talk openly and honestly (84%) and share important knowledge and information (80%). People stay in touch with a six-monthly company update, weekly meetings with staff from different teams and through regular brainstorming sessions. New joiners can shadow someone at work, meet people from each team and usually have lunch with the managing director. Last year the firm offered more than 140 training courses, spending £23,000 on external programmes. Staff have six-monthly reviews to identify their needs and to provide them with a chance to give feedback to management. Holiday allowance is 22 to 25 days a year and people can buy or sell three days in exchange for salary. There are days in lieu for excellent performance or success in charity fundraising events. A third of staff can do some work from home and employees are able to negotiate career breaks. Everyone has performance- and profit-related pay, childcare vouchers, access to a free gym, critical illness cover and an employee assistance programme. About a third have private healthcare, including their families. A corporate social responsibility committee meets every two months to organise events and the company has recycling bins and signs to encourage people to switch off computers and lights. It has also raised thousands of pounds for charities and staff say this support is not driven by a desire for good publicity (71%, a top 15 score). The company also offers employees up to two days of paid leave for charity work. To ensure people get out for a breath of fresh air, it funds corporate membership of a local golf course and offers company bicycles to help people scoot to and from work.
