The Dorset and Wiltshire-based charity provides care for children with life-limiting illnesses and supports their families. It recruits people based on compassion, care, and excellence.
Chief Executive, Martin Edwards, acts as a chat show host during virtual coffee sessions for staff at Julia's House Children's Hospice. He introduces each person and asks them about what's happening in their work, before inviting general questions, ideas, and suggestions on how to improve communication and staff support.
In a physically and mentally demanding workplace, staff wellbeing is a high priority, and the charity runs "decompression sessions" after particularly intense periods of clinical care.
These sessions enable staff to share their pressures, reflect on what has been done well, or not well, and support each other. To help achieve a better work-life balance for nursing and care staff, the organisation is introducing self-rostering to enable employees to book some shifts themselves to suit their home life.
Hospices achieve nationally recognised standards in care quality, management skills training, and employee engagement by supporting staff to be the best they can be in an emotionally demanding but immensely rewarding environment.
One mark of excellence is recognising the impact on the families with children in its care. It plays a leading role in national research into the benefits of regular respite breaks for parental relationships.
