LLAMAU HELPS HOMELESS young people and vulnerable women in south Wales to turn their lives around. Looking back on how Llamau had aided them, one person reported feeling confident and ready to face the world after almost 18 months in the charity's supported housing. Another credited a Llamau support worker with helping them to persist on a training course and is now optimistic about finding full-time work. The Cardiff charity takes its name from the old Welsh word for "steps" or "progression" and was last year's winner of our special award for training and development. For the Leadership factor, it came eighth among the small organisations (80% positive). Employees have confidence in the skills of the senior team (80%, ranking ninth). Profit and budget concerns are not the only things driving this organisation (83%), staff say, and Llamau is run on strong values (87%). Support workers are paid just under £22,000 a year on average and only one person is on £55,000 or more. People feel that they are remunerated fairly compared with workers in similar roles elsewhere (72%). www.llamau.org.uk
