Founded in 1988, the Mears Group Plc provides and manages 17,000 homes for local and central government and keeps 750,000 social housing properties across the UK in good repair. The Mears story began in 1988 when a maintenance contractor in Gloucestershire took its first steps as Mears Ltd. Within four years, the company won its first local authority contract from a cosy Portakabin.

In 1996, Chairman Bob Holt led the flotation on the Alternative Investment market, creating Mears Group Plc. CEO David Miles joined shortly afterwards. In 2005, Mears celebrated an order book reaching £1bn. It moved to the main London Stock Exchange in 2008 with turnover of £420m – that's £417.5m turnover growth in 13 years – an average rate of £32.2m per year.

In 2016, the company secured a five-year £300m Ministry of Defence deal to provide a national service in managing 3,400 of its properties. Three years later it won three government contracts to provide accommodation for asylum-seekers, its largest project to date.

Employees are updated on the company's financial position, health and safety guidance, the general impact of Covid-19 and other news via monthly Teams calls from the CEO and executive leaders. These are delivered to over 300 managers and each is expected to cascade the information across the workforce of 6,500 – especially also frontline workers – utilising a signed checklist.

Mears realised that people would look to their employer as a source of authority during the coronavirus crisis and has also urged staff to speak to colleagues or managers about their wellbeing and welfare.

Alongside direct communication, managers were responsible for rewriting the Mears mental health and wellbeing policies to ensure they were robust enough for Covid-19 times. The company appointed trained mental health mentors and details were made available in every branch to alert people who may require help.

Over 1,000 people have been recognised as ‘Mears Amazing People', with 500 of them sent a thank you e-card as the result of a peer-led colleague recognition programme that highlighted great service in the field. Nominees were all rewarded with a £20 gift card.
