NAViGO is an award-winning social enterprise that provides mental health services to the NHS and beyond across North East Lincolnshire. Its objective is to deliver the kind of care and support that the people who work there would be happy for their own families to use.
Based in Grimsby, its services encompass acute patient and community units, family therapy and a specialist eating disorder facility. It also covers psychiatry, rehab and recovery, personality disorder and community mental health. Employees at this large not-for-profit receive a competitive salary, sickness pay and a pension scheme. They can take advantage of flexible working, leadership initiatives, an in-house occupational health service, a confidential careline, salary sacrifice, a cycle scheme, loans, local and national discounts, holistic therapy and a staff awards programme. NAViGO employs a wide range of professionals including mental health practitioners, occupational therapists, social workers and specialist nurses.
It responded to the pressures placed on staff by the arrival of coronavirus last year by providing mental health drop-in sessions, “wobble rooms”, a wellbeing magazine, weekly staff briefings and a 24/7 confidential support line. There were also Easter eggs, afternoon teas and other treats to keep up morale.
The organisation marks its 10th anniversary this year. Its goals include achieving equality between staff and service users; supporting and improving the local population's mental health and wellbeing; promoting social inclusion and choice; and supporting service users to reach their true potential.
My manager cares about how satisfied I am in my job
Staff development programmes continued despite the demands of delivering healthcare services during the pandemic. The organisation aims to identify future talent and address succession planning for leadership roles. Workshops were delivered virtually on subjects including coaching, managing self and managing others.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
At the outset of the pandemic NAViGO extended its psychological support programme to 24/7 for staff, with a dedicated fast track to an available clinician and a follow-up procedure. Its psychology, wellbeing and crisis practitioners stepped up to provide informal sessions across the local area.
I am happy with the pay and benefits I receive in this job
The office Christmas hamper, although welcome, can be a little too corporate. That's not the way things are done at NAViGO, which gives staff a choice of seasonal vouchers to spend at local small businesses: there's two community butchers, a fishmonger, a deli and a garden centre.
