If staff at PJ Care need inspiration they need only look at the story of their founder, Jan Flawn. She left school aged 15 without any qualifications but trained as a nurse when she was 30 after having a daughter with disabilities. She later gained an MBA and started PJ Care in 2000 at the age of 50.

She wanted to provide dedicated care homes for adults with neurological conditions because, at that time, the only option for them was to live in care homes for the elderly.

Flawn opened her first centre, Bluebirds, in Milton Keynes, in 2001. PJ Care opened a second centre, Mallard House, in Milton Keynes in 2005 and, in the summer of 2012, its flagship Eagle Wood Neurological Care Centre was opened in Peterborough.

Today it employs 600 staff and runs eight units in Milton Keynes and Peterborough providing specialist care and rehabilitation for almost 200 people with progressive or acquired neurological conditions, including Huntington's disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. The company also cares for people with spinal injuries.

Last year, Bluebirds neurological care centre was awarded Care Home of the Year by the Gold Standards Framework, for the care of people nearing the end of their life. The company also won Health, Medical and Social Care Employer of the Year in the national BAME Apprenticeship Awards.

"We are delighted to have won this award because we are genuinely attempting to remove barriers to employment and learning,” said Flawn's son and PJ Care's chairman, Neil Russell.

Wellbeing

72% of staff agreed

I am happy with the balance between my work and home life

An increase in staff and more flexibility for shifts has enabled unit staff to have more time off to recharge their batteries and spend time with their families. There is also a limit to the number of consecutive shifts anyone can work to ensure staff get a break.
My Company

83% of staff agreed

I feel proud to work for this organisation

A raffle with a first prize of a £22,000 car, plus five other prizes of £1,000 travel vouchers, was organised to try to reduce the number of staff leaving and to encourage them to get their Covid vaccinations. Staff were also encouraged to speak to directors to allay fears about the vaccine.
Personal Growth

73% of staff agreed

This job is good for my own personal growth

The company's biggest successes have come from training carers to become nurses through programmes with Anglian Ruskin University Cambridge. The move has given opportunities to individuals who would otherwise not have been able to afford training.

Quote from the top...
PJ Care is committed to employee engagement and has, over the past few months, improved staff communication to ensure that every member of our staff has the most up to date information about the company and their own prospects and futures. We send out daily Covid emails so that everyone is aware of the status of our residents and staff across the business and a monthly newsletter called Platinum which has lots of interesting articles and developments within PJ Care. We have an EDI committee to promote equal opportunities and to enable every single member of staff to be the best version of themselves. We have implemented Personal Development Plans (PDPs) for every member of staff to enable them to build on their current roles and develop their knowledge and skills. Our staff benefits have been strengthened and our Head of Joy and Wellbeing and our Wellbeing Angels are always available for staff to talk to and engage with, along with line managers.

Neil Russell, Chairman - PJ Care
