Left in the lurch after a builder walked out on him during his home improvement project in 2005, Andy Skipworth founded the core of Rated People – a trusted online place for homeowners to find skilled tradespeople, and a steady source of clients to help tradespeople to grow their businesses.
From this seed of a brilliant idea the company has grown to into the UK's leading online marketplace matching homeowners with skilled, local tradespeople. One million jobs are posted on the website or homeowner app each year and over 50,000 tradespeople use the Rated People platform. Job posts span more than 30 different trades and over 200 services – or skills, as they are known at Rated People.
Once a job is complete the homeowner is encouraged to leave a rating and review of the tradesperson, and this feedback gives other homeowners peace of mind, knowing they can employ someone reliable to improve, fix or maintain their homes. Now backed by venture capital investors the London-based company is led by a professional management team who are committed to continuing to grow the business.
Giving tradespeople access to top quality job leads along with the support and technology to grow their businesses, Rated People allows them to succeed on their own terms. When the pandemic hit Rated People ensured staff were well-equipped and comfortable working from home, supplying desk chairs and checking their WiFi speeds – with new modems sent to those with poor coverage.
I have confidence in the leadership skills of the senior management team
The core values introduced in 2020: empower one another, empathise and be open, experiment and innovate, and enable success – are integrated into everyday behaviours within the company and with customers. Rated People introduced payment breaks and rolling monthly plans for tradespeople when many were struggling during lockdown – an example of empathising and being open to changing the business model.
I love working for this organisation
The Rated People ‘culture club' organised a virtual Christmas party with a cocktail masterclass, prize giveaways and games. It also sent employees ‘surprise and delight' gifts to lift spirits throughout the pandemic – from hampers to Rated People jumpers and cooking kits from Dishoom and Pizza Pilgrims. A peer recognition ‘shout out' scheme is based around the company values and weekly ‘all hands' updates include the whole workforce.
My team is fun to work with
When some employees hosted a company-wide forum on the Black Lives Matter movement, featuring a video on structural racism then shared personal stories of how the BLM movement personally impacted them, they did not expect further sharing. What followed, however, was over two hours' worth of people from across the business sharing their reflections on BLM and personal experiences with privilege or discrimination.
