For nearly 100 years, Rickard Luckin has been helping its business and private clients 'realise their potential and achieve their aims' – something that also holds true for its own employees.
The Essex-based firm of chartered accountants and tax advisors, with offices in Basildon, Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea, prides itself on its team's personal and in-depth approach to clients, taking the time to understand their needs and aspirations.
And it's a workplace that listens to its staff too. Its 'RL Awards' were developed from the ground up by a team of volunteers passionate about celebrating the team's success.
The annual event – which combines updates on business plans for the year ahead and a celebration of inspirational achievements and behaviours – involves the previous year’s winners choosing their successors from a list of colleague-nominated team members.
The firm has listened to the team's concerns about the rising cost-of-living, bringing forward appraisal-linked pay rises by three months and benchmarking to ensure salaries keep pace with the market and firm size.
Following feedback, all staff now have company-issued mobile phones, making it easier to separate their home and working lives while embracing the latest tech.
And the firm's team of around 160 employees also benefit from 'wellbeing time.' Each year, they can take up to 45 hours during the working day, using the time for a check-in with a colleague over coffee or a walk to chat and connect.
My team is fun to work with
The Social Committee aims to keep everyone engaged, with activities to suit all tastes. They take place at lunchtime, after work and on weekends, so nobody's left out. Recent socials have included Chinese New Year, the summer ball ('RL Fest'), the Christmas Party, go-karting, escape rooms, and art exhibitions.
I am paid fairly for the work I do relative to people in similar positions in similar organisations
Trainees are supported in their own career journey, developing and building experience at their own pace. The firm's trainee development programme uses a bespoke skills matrix where each skill achieved has a monetary value and feeds into the six-month salary reviews. And the firm's appraisal process involves 360 feedback to make it less subjective.
This job is good for my own personal growth
Everyone can take advantage of the 'RL Development Academy', which combines online learning with on-the-job training and knowledge-sharing forums to develop technical, business and soft skills. And the 'Promotion Pathway' allows employees to apply for promotion when they feel ready and present business cases for new roles.
