The Superannuation Arrangements of the University of London (SAUL) was established in 1976 to provide pensions for non-academic staff at the University of London.
It is a dedicated team of pensions experts who provide a range of services including payroll, finance, investment, and communications in addition to pensions administration. SAUL employs just under 60 staff in its central London office; it is a friendly and caring company with a family atmosphere and is truly focused on its team’s wellbeing.
Its vision is to make SAUL a well-run and well-managed pension scheme valued by members and employers alike. And this vision is underpinned by a strategic goal focused on its employees – to have a fully-engaged, well-motivated, and knowledgeable team.
This includes providing flexible working, with the ability to build up extra leave, and a professional development programme focused on coaching and mentoring with access to digital resources and regular conversations about their career goals.
SAUL supports employees in every aspect of their lives, with mental health first aiders, an EAP helpline and an active social committee. There are also regular team-building events and lunchtime workouts.
SAUL’s focus on its employees allows the team to flourish at work and results in excellent service for its members and employers, in turn helping the company achieve its vision.
People in my team go out of their way to help me
For its remote workers, SAUL ran virtual events including cook-a-longs, quizzes, pay-day drinks, and even a virtual escape room. It also holds regular staff briefings on Zoom to keep everyone updated with company updates and ensures staff can see each other’s faces regularly. These events have helped establish a culture of togetherness.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
SAUL welcomes new starters on the intranet on their first day and asks existing employees to introduce themselves to the new joiner. New starters also complete a 'getting to know you' interview for the intranet. This includes anything from hobbies and interests to any encounters with famous people or their favourite jokes.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
SAUL operates a Flexitime system, whereby employees can work any time between 7am and 7pm, as long as they work no more than 10 hours in a day, with up to two hours for lunch. Staff can also build up an extra day off each month if they work an additional seven hours.
