Employees surveyed at Scottish Friendly believe it's a great place to work. This is a proud achievement for the firm.
The Glasgow-based mutual life group – one of the largest in the UK – was born as the City of Glasgow Friendly Society 160 years ago to provide financial security and peace of mind for working-class families.
As a mutual, its members own it and it is run for their benefit – not the interests of shareholders. And this "we're in this together" approach shapes life at the business.
Its mutual set-up means that its team of around 250 employees don't receive regular bonuses, but plenty of other benefits make it a "great place to work."
Staff can choose to work from home three days a week. They get free private healthcare and have recently received a £1000 payment to help offset cost-of-living increases. There's also a generous pension scheme, discounted gym memberships, and season ticket loans.
And great places to work are those that listen to staff. Since establishing an HR team in 2020, the Group has prioritised its 'employee voice’. It's launched a 'People Ambassador' forum where people can share concerns or queries on various topics from wellbeing to health and safety and get them acted upon.
And 'listening sessions' with customer-facing teams have generated 250 business improvement ideas. These will be taken forward as quick wins and longer-term projects.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Scottish Friendly recently undertook a series of three sessions on menopause for colleagues and managers to equip them with the skills needed to support any employees going through menopause. Additionally, it provides information on how diet and lifestyle can assist with symptoms and signposting when to reach out to GP, HR, and managers.
I have confidence in the leadership skills of the senior management team
Its leaders are committed to organisational clarity and have supported colleagues in defining and understanding the company’s purpose, values, and vision. Instead of bringing in a consultancy to work with the board to define its values from the top down, the HRD asked for colleague volunteers to describe and define the values.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
The organisation has supported the Scottish Friendly Children’s Book Tour for 25 years. This charity brings authors, illustrators, and other creative practitioners to schools, libraries, and public venues across the UK in order to improve children’s literacy. It has also forged strong links with Action for Children and raised £14,000 for this charity.
