Recognising that its people are its most valuable assets is key to welded wire mesh manufacturer Siddal & Hilton’s ambition to become the local employer of choice in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

The long-established firm, whose mesh products are used in applications such as high security fencing, industrial, and construction applications, is striving to develop a highly skilled, competent, and dedicated team and a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
In order to become a world class mesh manufacturer and top employer in its local area, Siddal & Hilton recognises the importance of developing a ‘one team’ ethos built on its core values of ‘trust’, ‘honesty’, ‘openness’, ‘integrity’, ‘commitment’ and ‘fun’, creating an environment that delivers outstanding levels of job satisfaction and recognition for generations to come.

In combination with its ongoing recruitment drive, in July 2021 it launched a bespoke training programme for new starters, to equip them with the specialist skills they need to understand the nature of the work and operate the sophisticated machinery within six months – particularly important as the firm enjoys a period of growth and expansion that has seen it invest in new equipment.

This investment, it says, marks a major milestone in its journey to becoming world class by not only having the best machinery on the market, but by investing in its people to have the skills to use it.

A weekly newsletter update was established and circulated to all employees that were either furloughed or remained active in their roles to ensure key messages and information was delivered. The company encouraged open communication in line with company values, particularly in support of any mental health or wellbeing issues.

Wellbeing

The company’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) was extended to support not only to staff members, but also their families. Personal, empathetic support was offered on a one-to-one basis with their line manager for any employees who were struggling, ill, or otherwise impacted by the pandemic.

Leadership

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) show a commitment to the company’s values by challenging when behaviours are not demonstrated, and by holding each other – and members of the workforce – to account. The SLT also ensures values are integrated into recruitment and development programmes, as well as performance reviews.
