Perks at Slimming World are heavily weighted towards keeping employees happy, healthy and fit. The company, which every year helps more than 500,000 people lose weight and sustain a healthy lifestyle, provides its own staff with an on-site fitness instructor, a fitness centre open 24/7 and free fresh fruit and drinks. Slimming World staff believe their senior managers truly live the values of the organisation (shown by an 84% positive score) — several senior staff and directors were once members, trying to lose weight themselves. Employees are inspired by Caryl Richards, the managing director, earning the company an 88% score and a top 20 rating on this measure. They also have a great deal of faith in her (89%). Although there are only 238 permanent staff, more than 5,500 groups are held weekly nationwide, through 2,500 Slimming World-trained consultants. The support that staff offer members is reflected in the support the company gives employees in the form of training. Group leaders are equipped with the skills to run their own business. They are also given the chance to progress to senior roles through a modular step up management and development programme. Slimming World awards are presented at a summer ball, with recognition for the employee of the year, consultant of the year, district manager of the year and team of the year. District managers can double their salaries through outstanding work and growth in their area. Staff say the organisation acknowledges the value of their contribution (75%). Personal as well as professional achievements are celebrated by the company. Long service awards are presented to loyal staff, and weddings, birthdays and new babies all bring a contribution from the firm. Christmas presents are handed out to all employees and their children. Returning an 85% score, staff say they love working for the organisation. Slimming World does its bit to tackle Britain's obesity problem, spending more than £200,000 a year on research and development. There is a sense that the company is providing an important service and employees believe that the organisation is run on strong principles (90%) and that it makes a difference to the world we live in, returning an 89% positive score. The company supports universities in their research into weight and diet, and works in partnership with the British Dietetic Association on a healthy eating campaign. It also liaises with supermarkets and food manufacturers to help members make healthier choices.
