Motivational quotes, riddles and jokes were included in daily videos and messages from bosses at The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) to add a bit of levity amid the pandemic gloom and encourage a bit of competition among teams. The Senior Leadership Team also spontaneously called employees to see how they were doing.

The Solihull-based not-for-profit organisation provides support, training and education services including professional certificates and qualifications to more than 9,500 members. It also champions the personal growth of its own staff through its four level Academy training programme which focusses on developing soft skills. To promote more internal development and progression, the CIPP has developed a “succession tool” which assesses factors including motivation and learning agility to identify potential talent within the organisation.

The small organisation has re-launched it charity committee and has invited staff to get involved and come up with innovative ways of supporting good causes throughout the pandemic. A virtual fundraising bingo game was held to raise money for the CIPP's two charities and staff are encouraged to support good causes through Payroll Giving.

The CIPP has continued to promote the Employee of the Month award throughout lockdown and the pandemic with the winner being rewarded with a high street voucher or an hour off work. Employee of the Year gets an engraved trophy and their birthday off.

In response to staff requests to be more involved in developing the business, strategy sessions have been introduced across all departments.

In addition to daily team catch-ups, a virtual social group was set up called The Locked Inn and on Friday afternoons employees were invited to get together to socialise informally which was also a great way to introduce new starters to the wider team in a more relaxed environment.

A Mental Health Hub was set up and more staff were trained as mental health first aiders to help identify signs of mental health or signs of stress earlier. An online wellness event including Yoga and Pilates sessions was held to promote positive mental wellbeing.
