FOR TEESSIDE'S YOUNG people, and those struggling with debt, job hunting or trying to start a business, Five Lamps is there to light the way. It was first established in 1985 as Thornaby Impasse, to help locals — mostly men, because of the closure of the steelworks — keep skills and learn new ones. Today this returner to our not-for-profit list, after an absence of two years, has five sites in Stockton-on-Tees, and helps individuals, families and disadvantaged communities feel included socially and economically. It concentrates on four areas: finance, enterprise, employment and youth. What is expected of them is clear, say workers, scoring this measure 82% positive — only two other small organisations did better. But it is on questions relating to their own health and wellbeing that employees give the top score for not being under too much pressure to concentrate (80%). www.fivelamps.org.uk
