Growing telecoms company Yo Telecom is always on the lookout for new ways to create a workplace where people feel they can succeed and grow.
Based in Southampton, Yo has recently opened a second office in Manchester and expanded the team to number 70 like-minded individuals. People are able to collaborate in a friendly working environment and make lasting friendships too.
The business was set up by childhood friends Nathan Hanslip and Ryan O'Carroll in 2013 with the primary purpose of helping customers increase their success. One of the company's core values is to see problems as challenges and face them with optimism as it provides communication solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Senior leaders concentrate on recruiting people whose personality will be an asset, rather than looking for specific experience. “We believe we can train people into roles and focus more on culture fit to ensure people will thrive in our company,” the business said.
During the past year, regular surveys have invited employees to raise any queries or issues and weekly company meetings have provided a platform for anonymous questions – and prompt answers. Communication flows both ways on Yo's Slack channels.
Short-term incentives have helped to bring success in a competitive market. Before coronavirus restrictions, the company has provided trips to Barcelona and Dubai for those who meet targets.
My manager cares about how satisfied I am in my job
There are no barriers between managers and the senior team. Regular coaching and sharing of best practice helps to support managers, and in turn they understand the importance of keeping regular contact with team members and looking after them and their health.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Everyone has been encouraged to keep exercising while working from home over the past year and out-of-hours virtual events such as pub quizzes have lifted team spirits. The company is working towards introducing a flexible working schedule.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
Yo Telecom provided staff to volunteer at a Covid vaccination centre during the coronavirus pandemic. Recycling facilities are provided for employees with clear signage at designated stations at both offices in Southampton and Manchester.
