A 'Celebrating Success' programme, based on the core value of providing a “premium caring experience delivered by our great teams to those we care for”, is designed to reward outstanding performance. The group prides itself on having a listening management. When an engagement survey indicated staff wanted strong leadership alongside taking an interest in wellbeing, further enhancements were made to leadership training and a Wellbeing and Covid Resources internet hub created to act as a one-stop-shop for advice.

Going the extra mile to provide excellent care is recognised by colleagues, residents and relatives voting for “Employee of the Month”, which earns a £25 gift card and a certificate. Free training and development opportunities are offered while staff are also supported to complete externally-accredited qualifications to help them achieve their career goals.

Community engagement is encouraged with almost half of the proceeds from the staff lottery going to charity or local projects, with more than £9,000 donated in 2020. Recipients have included Barchester's own charitable Foundation, which provides grants to support older people experiencing loneliness and isolation.
