Beaverbrooks has been a fixture on our high streets for over 100 years, with an unwavering commitment to 'enriching lives' – those of its customers, staff and communities.
The Lancashire-based family business has over 1100 staff across its 64 Beaverbrooks stores and 18 dedicated luxury brand boutiques. Its "supportive working environment" has seen many staff serve over 25 years and 90% of managers promoted from within.
And the jewellery and watch retailer is big on get-togethers, with its 'Be Social' team organising everything from trips to Alton Towers and theatre nights to weekly fitness classes and family-friendly beach hut events.
Beaverbrooks is supporting its team through the cost-of-living crisis. It's been formally recognised for not employing anyone on zero-hours contracts, either directly or indirectly. It's overhauled its performance bonus scheme to make targets more achievable for store colleagues and has awarded special bonuses. It also offers free office breakfasts and provides fruit snacks for all.
And the retailer leads from the top when it comes to giving back. Chairman Mark Adlestone dedicates almost a third of his working week to charity work and the community, with the MD and senior management team also volunteering regularly. The Beaverbrooks Charitable Trust has distributed over £2.5 million to 570 UK charities over the past year.
Meanwhile, employees get two paid-for volunteering days a year. Over the past 12 months, they've spent 3,400 hours on activities such as sports coaching and helping food banks. And more than four in 10 donate to charity each month through payroll giving.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
The company closes its stores on Boxing Day in a rare move for retail. It rewards staff for their hard work and loyalty and means they can spend valuable time with their families. And a gift of a week's wages at Christmas means they can make the most of this time together.
This organisation is run on strong values / principles
The company uses internal podcasts as a new and innovative way to engage its people. These have included conversations with the Chairman and MD and offerings from diversity and inclusion groups and a 'shining stars' group recognising high achievers in stores. There are also bespoke publications for business updates, celebrating colleagues, charity, and community.
I am happy with the pay and benefits I receive in this job
Rewards are not just monetary; the company takes time to recognise and celebrate achievements. This has included a London celebration for Jewellery Education Training (JET) students, a results-focused annual awards conference, a yearly 'Shining Stars' party for top performers and quarterly branch visits from directors to celebrate team accomplishments.
