THE 2,800-PLUS staff at the British Red Cross are in no doubt that the organisation makes a real difference to the world, returning a positive score of 90%. Just two mid-sized bodies scored higher. Staff think it is run on strong values (87%, ranking it second) and they love working there (77%). The charity provides a great service (84%), say employees, who work at more than 900 locations across the country. In addition to helping people as part of their job, employees also have at least five days a year to undertake charitable activities in work time. Last year 1,205 workers volunteered and people don't think the organisation's support of worthy causes is driven by a desire for the publicity (67%, a top 10 score). The charity, which has replaced disposable paper cups with reusable mugs and provides jugs of tap water in place of bottled water, ranks 11th in our Giving Something Back category. Employees feel proud to work for the British Red Cross (86%, the third highest score) and say their job is an important part of their life (79%). Work is stimulating (73%) and people get on well with managers, who take an active interest in their wellbeing (74%). Staff also have a great deal of faith in Sir Nicholas Young, the chief executive (70%), who runs the charity on strong moral principles (79%, a top 10 score). Perks for staff, more than 40% of whom have been on the payroll for five or more years, include childcare vouchers, subsidised sports, discounted services, an employee assistance scheme, a health cash plan and independent financial advice. redcross.org.uk
