Keen to ensure the small minority of staff who were furloughed during the pandemic still felt involved, Broadland Housing Association (BHA) kept in regular contact and encouraged them to take part in welfare calls to vulnerable tenants as well as team meetings.
The not-for-profit organisation founded in 1963, which provides more than 5,100 homes across Norfolk and north Suffolk, also introduced a monthly online survey to see how its workforce was coping and what it could do to help them.
Broadland knows that to deliver on its mission of helping to create thriving neighbourhoods and communities, looking after the wellbeing staff from its electricians and plumbers to carpenters, cleaners and estate service workers is a priority. In response to concerns about the increase in their energy bills as a result of working from home, BHA introduced a monthly “utility” payment of £26.
Parents who had to juggle home schooling and work, were able to work flexibly and in some cases reduce their hours with no financial detriment and the organisation also allowed staff to carry over additional annual leave into this year, understanding that employees wanted to hold back until they can travel again and not just use the time up sitting around at home. Broadland also enhanced its sick pay entitlement for Covid-related absences.
In addition to regular team quizzes and coffee meetings, informal meet-ups are encouraged, while sharing good news stories, giving thanks and compliments has been an important part of boosting morale for the Senior Leadership Team.
The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future
Employees have monthly meetings with their line manager to discuss their development and are encouraged to make use of the large annual training budget. Learning opportunities include job shadowing, secondments, day courses, online courses, professional training qualifications as well as an allowance for membership fees to governing bodies.
People in my team go out of their way to help me
The organisation has maintained its twice yearly "Challenge and Change" event where employees have the opportunity to take part in quizzes, talks, demonstrations and wellbeing exercises which provide a chance for them to see team members they may not see often.
My organisation encourages charitable activities
As part of a biodiversity competition, staff were asked to share photos of how they have bought nature into their green spaces during lockdown. Every year staff collect used Christmas cards to make them into Christmas tags which are sold to raise money for charity.
