The show must go on could easily be the motto for the 70 staff working for the Business Design Centre. The centre, in the London borough of Islington, hosts a wide range of exhibitions and conferences including the Wine Show London and the London Art Fair. Staff, who help to organise 80 shows and 350 conferences annually, have fun with their colleagues, with a positive score of 84%, and feel a strong sense of family in their teams (81%). The company is owned by its founders, the Morris family, and when chief executive Dominic Jones celebrated the firm's 20th anniversary in October, he said it had managed to keep its original family values. Staff agree, saying he runs the company on sound moral principles, is an inspiration (both 80%) and that senior managers live its values (84%). Every month, there are one-to-one meetings with managers and everyone has an annual appraisal. People say their managers are open and honest, with an 86% positive score that ranks the company inside the top 15 SMEs for this measure. It earns another high ranking for the lack of stress-related symptoms reported by staff in the past year; this time the 83% positive score places the company just outside the top 30. After five years, holiday builds from 20 to 25 days a year. Everyone can have another five days off unpaid, new fathers have an extra week of leave and maternity benefits are boosted. The company runs wellbeing weeks, offering free gym trial memberships, massages and healthy food. A few people work from home, with laptops, BlackBerrys and mobile phones available. Staff have the benefit of a noncontributory pension and 40% off meals in the on-site restaurant. The company is charitable and employees say their efforts to support good causes outside work are supported (76%). Management team members contribute to support groups such as the Town Centre Partnership, there is an energy committee to improve environmental friendliness and the company gives a proportion of profits to the Morris Charitable Trust, established by its owners. Staff find it worthwhile doing something impressive for the business, because the firm awards "Starburst" prizes of £250, after tax, and an annual gift for the person who has been the most consistently amazing.
