ONLINE learning that changes lives is what Creating Careers aims to deliver with its vision2learn courses. Its 63 employees feel it makes the world a better place, scoring 89% positive, in fourth place among small companies.? Founded in 1999, the business almost doubled its staff numbers last year, moving to a new head office in Newcastle upon Tyne. More than 38,000 pupils from 450 secondary schools are using vision2learn courses. As well as providing training for qualifications through schools, the firm also offers some courses direct to adults, with the help of government funding. ?The company does best in our survey for Wellbeing, scoring 79% (14th). Employees have 30 days of annual leave and can adopt flexible work patterns at any stage of their career, or take a career break for travel or study. The working week ranges from 32 to 37 hours, depending on seniority, and employees don't feel they spend too much time at the office (74%).? The firm aims for a “culture that discourages blame” and this reduces the pressure to perform well (85%). Yoga classes, five-a-side football and lunchtime rambles around the area promote good health (91%, seventh). It funds private health insurance for satff and their families, and a 24-hour advice and counselling helpline.? “Having flexible working patterns has been an essential way to retain talented people, especially working parents,” the company says. “The pressure on working parents is huge. Feeling guilty about missing parts of a child's day or events in their life can be intolerable.”?People don't feel the organisation takes advantage of them (82%). “Staff have responded to our flexibility with increased loyalty and dedication,” the company adds. ? Managers provide excellent role models and respond quickly to any signs of stress (both 85%). Creating Careers spends more than £700 a head on development, supporting people to take work-related qualifications and allowing time off for study. ? Bosses at all levels are good at listening as well as telling people what to do (about 86%). Everyone can share what they have been doing in company-wide “Post-it” meetings.? Creating Careers has a vision of “a world where everyone is motivated to achieve and make progress”, and its employees feel there are no limits to their opportunities to learn and grow (84%, a top 10 score).
