Darlington Building Society was formed in 1856, as the Darlington Working Men's Equitable Permanent Building Society, to benefit local people.
As a mutual organisation it is committed to working for the benefit of its members, supporting employment, people, and communities.
Today, the Society has nine branches spread across the Northeast of England, including the Tees Valley, North Yorkshire, and County Durham. The investment in its branch network is also supported by Darlingtonline, the Society’s dedicated online banking service.
As well as caring for its members, Darlington Building Society also cares for its employees. It prides itself on preventative wellbeing support, and aims to create a safe environment for colleagues to speak truly about how they feel.
It has 14 trained Mental Health First Aiders across the business who triage colleagues and refer them to the MH specialist in the HR team. The organisation also provides an EAP for general day-to-day support or lower-grade mental health changes.
Darlington Building Society also provides private counselling outside of its EAP. It will pay for 8 sessions with a specialist counsellor of the employee’s choosing.
The organisation recognises that early intervention with a trusted professional is key to helping a colleague manage their wellbeing. Its wellbeing offering is supported by its Wellbeing Hub. The site and is kept up to date with new podcasts, webinars and news on wellbeing matters.
