Award-winning property recruitment consultancy deverellsmith Ltd describes itself as “a quirky, unique SME that puts people at the centre, with its strategy, customer service, and products at the top of the industry's game”. Founded as a one-man band in 2006, it has 45 staff members in London and a branch in the US and recruits across the full lifecycle of the property industry.

CEO Andrew Deverell-Smith has a record of 100% filling every executive search instruction ever undertaken. In his past life Andrew was a county cricketer and is a qualified ski instructor, too. Giving back is close to his heart. The company was the supporting founder behind Do Some Good, a charity platform for property firms that has raised money and provided support for those vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic.

As an international media brand, deverellsmith has a network of a quarter of a million property professionals across the globe. In recent years, the company launched client solutions and data and research teams, who work closely together on small- and large-scale strategic projects to provide expert data and analysis to employees, clients and the wider industry.

To look after its own, the recruiter reviewed its benefits package and announced the introduction of 10 paid volunteering days which employees are encouraged to take. The company has also put a strategy in place to become B Corporation accredited, a process where firms are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers and the community

At the beginning of the pandemic, senior managers hosted company-wide calls twice daily to make sure everyone had as much clarity and support as possible. These calls are now twice weekly. During monthly town halls, staff could ask bosses anything around company performance, financial position and job security.

The most recent survey of February 2021 sees the firm looking to swap to a payroll provider who will offer benefits including employee assistance helplines covering physical and mental health; a discount scheme; and an app where people can see their payslips and pensions. It also plans a new handbook and contracts.
