Known affectionately as the Dougie Mac, the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in north Staffordshire merged with the Donna Louise Children’s Trust, a children's hospice, in 2021. The move means that the round-the-clock services that were available only to adults have been extended to include children, young adults and their families as well.
The hospice, which now operates from two sites, is a centre of excellence for palliative and end-of-life care. Dougie Mac's services are provided free. It receives 20% from clinical commissioning grants and the other 80% is funded by the generosity of the community. One long-term corporate sponsor is the Stoke-on-Trent-based Hanley Economic Building Society.
Dougie Mac provides holistic care, covering physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs. Its community-based practice includes a 'Hospice at Home' team and a 26-bed unit in Blurton. Palliative care nurse specialists run a 24-hour advice line.
In 2018, it was the first hospice in Staffordshire to appoint an Admiral Nurse – nurses with specialist training in dementia. Last year, it was the only UK hospice to have two. The hospice aims to help people achieve the best quality of life when they need it most by growing as a sustainable organisation, delivering value for money and remaining true to its values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence.
For staff, the benefits include 35 days' holiday, rising with length of service, a pension scheme that makes contributions of up to 12%, a counselling helpline and free parking. The 'Dougie Awards' celebrate staff achievements.
