Douglas Macmillan Hospice, better known as Dougie Mac, is a compassionate community-oriented organisation that has been providing free hospice services to over 3,500 local people with life-limiting illnesses annually since 1973. The organisation extended its support in 2021 by merging with the local children's hospice, Donna Louise, and in 2024, it further expanded its service by merging with a small Dementia charity, Approach.
Dougie Mac's dedicated staff is its greatest asset, with the organisation's CARE values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence deeply embedded in its culture. To maintain this culture, the organisation utilises best practice frameworks, such as Investors in Excellence, and fosters open communication through regular team meetings, reflective sessions, and the 'Working Together Sessions', where staff can discuss strategy updates and voice their concerns directly to the CEO.
Dougie Mac is also dedicated to the wellbeing of its employees, fostering an open-door policy that encourages staff to freely raise questions or concerns. It celebrates employee achievements through a 'Greatix' system, which enables any employee to acknowledge a colleague or a team that has excelled in demonstrating the organisation's values. This focus on values is also reflected in the recruitment process and performance improvement process.
The organisation's commitment to its values and principles, its focus on continuous development, and its dedication to maintaining open and honest communication channels all contribute to a robust, value-driven culture that enables Dougie Mac to provide exceptional care to its community.
