Practices East Hampshire District Council's annual Values Event focuses on specific themes related to its three values of responsibility, fairness and respect. It includes team and individual development activities, competitions, prizes, fun, learning and lunch. The council provides opportunities for cross-council working on projects that are outside traditional departmental boundaries, such as the citizenship programme in which employees go into schools to encourage young people's awareness of and involvement in the local community. Every fortnight the chief executive distributes an informal e-mail briefing to update employees on current topics for the council. In addition, he issues an open invitation to staff to attend top management meetings. Senior managers take part in back-to-the-floor exercises and listen in to calls to the customer service centre. The council's management development programme helps to develop managers' self-awareness, team leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. There is also a secondment policy in place that allows staff members to join other teams for extended work placements. Pay and benefits All flexible working options are available to most employees. Benefits include subsidised sports facilities and a team and individual performance reward scheme.
