Staff at GMAC-RFC would put their mortgage on the chances of their company treating them well. The Berkshire-based firm, founded in 1998 and a subsidiary of the US firm ResCap, is the UK's 10th largest mortgage lender. Two of the company's core values are to appreciate people and to care deeply, and every year there is an annual award, named after Colin Duggleby, the late chief executive, to recognise the person who best does this. Employees give the business excellent scores for its wellbeing policies. They say they don't get too stressed (an 80% positive score), are not under too much pressure to concentrate (77%) and don't feel they are spending too much time working (68%), all three results putting GMAC-RFC in the top 20. Flexible work policies mean that more than a quarter of the 816 staff in the four UK offices work reduced or staggered hours or from home. People who work hard to achieve their goals can be rewarded with a luxury cruise. Top performers get a six-week paid sabbatical on top of annual holiday, which ranges from 23 to 27 days, depending on rank and service. Maternity leave is 10 weeks at full pay, 29 at the government minimum and 26 unpaid. There is a sports and social club offering everything from bowling evenings to netball, and staff say they have fun with their teams (81%) and feel that they care for each other (82%). Although nearly a quarter of employees joined the company in the past year, more have been there for at least five years and there are plenty of opportunities to progress, with half of all vacancies being filled from within the company. There is a good package of benefits such as performance- and profit-related pay for all, and private healthcare, with the option to pay to add family members to the scheme. Staff members feel good about the charity work they do, which includes giving up to 24 hours a year to good causes and a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for people who need them. Employees say the organisation puts a lot into the community (74%). Company projects include sponsoring anti-bullying books for schools and donating gifts and hampers to a local women's refuge.
