Job titles at Hertfordshire Sports Village reflect the variety of diversions that it offers to students and community users. You can be a roller-skating activator, a personal trainer, a swim teacher or even a marketing activator.

Owned by the University of Hertfordshire and opened in 2003, it combines a gym, a climbing wall, squash courts, football and rugby pitches and hard courts for tennis and netball on a site in Hatfield. Group classes include Box Fit, Deep Water Aquacise and Super Circuits.

In non-Covid times the venue is used all year round, not least by its employees. Customers include children learning to swim, Olympic athletes and international sports teams.

This small business is focused on providing exceptional customer service, to which its people are committed. The values which underpin it are known as WELCOMES: Welcoming, Extra mile, Leading by example, Consistency, Open (and honest), Memorable (for the right reasons), Enthusiastic about continuous improvement and Sport first.

Despite the difficulties it has faced during lockdowns, including the disruption to university life, the village has been available for use whenever possible in line with public health guidelines.

It recently opened a clinic for long Covid rehabilitation, where clients are offered fitness and nutritional advice. The condition can make it difficult for people to walk short distances or exercise, and the clinic team provides one-to-one support and helps set goals for recovery.

Some of this is delivered using the iHASCO e-learning platform and some courses are dealt with in-house. Kahoot! quiz software adds some fun to the proceedings.

My Team

I feel a strong sense of family in my team

Staff engagement is reinforced by weekly briefings and career development structures. Lockdown meant periods when staff were working at home so they were encouraged to stay active and off the sofa. An example of this was walking while attending virtual meetings or training sessions.
