ALMOST A THIRD of mothers nationally do not enjoy their working environment enough to want to return early after having a baby, according to research by ING Direct. The study by the bank last year showed that the number of mums taking full maternity leave had doubled since 2006. In order to entice its own employees back as soon as possible, Reading-based ING Direct gives women a one-off bonus of £1,500 on their return to work, on top of three months' full pay while they are off. Flexible working is important because it allows the company's call-centre staff to work at unsociable hours during the week and over the weekend. Options include working from home and the chance to take career breaks and sabbaticals of up to four months on half pay. This must be part of the reason staff are happy with the balance between their work and home life (69% positive) and are not usually exhausted when they get home (52%). Both are top 20 scores. During a summer fun day last year employees formed teams to build their own go-karts, which they then raced, followed by a barbecue. People say colleagues go out of their way to help them (79%) and care about each other (81%). Everyone can take one paid day off a year for charitable activity and last year 125 employees took advantage of this. Proceeds from an annual quiz night go to good causes and this year a wellie conga will raise funds. ING Direct encourages charitable activities (85%) and puts enough back into the local community (63%), say staff. Pure Orange, the bank's employee recognition scheme, allows people to nominate colleagues using an online system. Nominees receive a thank-you card explaining who put them forward and why, and the best get to pick a prize worth up to £35. About 50 people a month are nominated from the 828-strong workforce. A subsidiary of the Dutch bank ING Group, ING Direct was launched in Britain in 2003. Just over a fifth of employees have been with the company for five years or more and two-thirds of senior managers were promoted from within. www.ingdirect.co.uk
