J Murphy & Sons is a leading global, specialist engineering and construction company founded in 1951 that operates in the UK, Ireland and Canada on water, rail and power infrastructure projects.

The firm's three guiding values are to continue to run along family ownership lines, to never do any harm, to deliver projects through a directly employed workforce and to strive for continual improvement.

As part of its Murphy @ 75 strategy, the organisation aims to be a great place to work where everyone, regardless of their background, feels secure and comfortable about being themselves. As part of this, employees were encouraged to share their demographics, such as ethnic group, disability status and sexual orientation to help the company to identify its population and launch its One Murphy BIG Inclusion programme.

Last year, the company paid visits to schools, colleges and careers fairs to share experiences in the industry and promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to the younger generation. It has also employed more than 50 people through the government’s Kickstart campaign and given some permanent contracts.

Doing its bit for the planet, Murphy has an environmental sustainability strategy that aims to develop a culture of ownership and improvement, and raise the profile of environmental and sustainability issues. This includes removing unnecessary single-use plastics from the business this year and zero waste to landfill by 2025. As part of its climate action and safety strategic objective, the Murphy Roots programme engages with schools and gives away trees to local community groups.
